Because Legionella bacteria can double every 15 minutes, regular water sampling and tank disinfection is recommended.

Water tank cleaning every 6 months or once a year at least will ensure that your water tank is in sound condition and that no outside contaminants foul your drinking water.

Legionella is a particularly deadly bacteria that can lead to legionnaire’s disease. To ensure there is no trace of Legionella in your drinking water, be sure to carry out a Legionella Risk Assessment and a strict Water Tank Cleaning procedure regularly.

Potable water is drinking water that has been treated to a standard of cleanliness that’s safe for human consumption.

To clean your water tank at home drain the water tank, clean the inside of the tank, wash and rinse the tank with a high pressure hose pipe, disinfect the tank and pipes and finally safely empty the tank and leave to dry. You’ll need a water tank cleaning kit including industry approved chemicals and protective clothing.

Water tank cleaning should be conducted at least annually but water testing is recommended every 6 months to check for harmful bacteria such as E.coli and Legionella. Domestic water tank cleaning and commercial water tank cleaning are subject to different regulations so be sure to check Scottish Government guidelines.

Anti-bacterial spray or liquid bleach can be used to disinfect your water tank at home.

Remove sludge from your water tank by siphoning without emptying the tank. The Department of Health recommends using an inverted funnel in the end of a hose to move it carefully across the bottom of the tank. Then the sludge, plus the lower portion of water in the tank, can be released to waste.
