We take water hygiene seriously. All our water samples are sent to UKAS accredited laboratories for specialist microbiological analysis. Our expert team conduct in-field sampling for commercial and domestic water supplies and will test your water for harmful bacteria such as Legionella and E.coli.

Fife’s towns and villages are supplied by water from various reservoirs, operated by Scottish Water, in the Lomond Hills. If you live in Fife it’s likely that your water and sewerage services come from Scottish Water, the cost of which is included in your council tax bill.

However, some rural parts of Fife operate on a private water supply. This means that their water comes from a spring, borehole, well, river or loch rather than Scottish Water.

Many properties in Fife are on a private water supply, some of which are known as Regulated Supplies, providing water to residential properties of over 50 occupants, Airbnbs, factories and rented cottages.

New Scottish legislation states that landlords who rent out entire properties or single rooms within a house that uses a private water supply, have a legal duty to ensure the health and safety of their tenants by testing their water supply.

Water Testing and Sampling

Water sampling is the action of sample collection and transportation. It’s different from water testing—the process of microbiological water analysis—and the British Standards Institution sets out different standards for potable water testing and water sampling methods.

The way a water sample is obtained has a significant impact on the final result. Poor sampling techniques can lead to false positives or cross contamination. There are also different types of water sampling and testing. It’s important to cover them all to get an accurate picture of your water system.

If testing water for Legionella we recommend using aseptic techniques and conducting your sample in accordance with British Standard BS 7592.

Water testing must be UKAS accredited otherwise the results are not deemed accurate. Some water analysis companies offer on-site Legionella testing but please be wary; an indication of risk is not confirmation of Legionella. A water sample that hasn’t been tested to UKAS standards holds zero value.

Testing Water for Legionella

Legionella is commonly transmitted by inhaling contaminated water droplets. Air conditioning cooling towers, hot and cold-water systems, humidifiers, showers, and whirlpool spas are common culprits for harbouring legionella.

When you inhale contaminated droplets, you’re at risk of catching Legionnaire’s disease, a type of pneumonia that’s fatal in around 10% of cases.

Potable water testing should be carried out in the following circumstances.

  • When the residents of the buildings are considered vulnerable

Water sampling should be conducted regularly to ensure safety, improve the quality of potable water, identify changes to your water supply over time and monitor the effectiveness of your existing water treatment system.

You can either purchase a water test kit or contact a water analysis company. Be aware that how you take a water sample can affect the result and that water sampling is not the same as water testing. You will need to send your sample to a UKAS accredited laboratory to receive an accurate result.
