Water Quality Improvement for a Food Production Site

Project Overview

A food production facility in West Lothian was experiencing elevated bacterial levels in its water supply. Despite being connected to the Scottish Water mains, the site was located at the end of the line, resulting in low residual free chlorine levels. Additionally, the facility stored water in an 80,000L cold water storage tank, where residual chlorine had completely dissipated before reaching the factory. This created a risk of microbial contamination, which needed to be mitigated to maintain hygiene and safety standards.

Challenges Identified

  • Low residual chlorine levels due to the site’s position at the end of the mains supply.
  • No residual chlorine present in the factory’s stored water, increasing bacterial risk.
  • Critical need for compliance with food safety and hygiene regulations.
  • External pipework exposed to temperature fluctuations, requiring protection from freezing.

Solution Implemented

  • Proportional Chlorine Dosing System
    • Installed two Grundfos proportional chlorine dosing systems to maintain consistent disinfection levels.
    • One system housed in a dedicated GRP kiosk to dose water feeding the factory.
    • One system installed in the existing plant room to dose water feeding the welfare facilities.
    • Each system incorporated two-stage sediment filtration to ensure clean, particulate-free water before dosing.
  • High-Quality Installation
    • All pipework fabricated using 316 stainless steel press-fit for durability and hygiene compliance.
    • External pipework fitted with trace heating and aluminium cladding for freeze protection.
  • GRP Kiosk Supply & Installation
    • A fully weatherproof GRP enclosure was supplied and installed by PHX to house the external dosing system.

Outcome

The upgraded system now ensures consistent chlorine levels throughout the facility, eliminating bacterial contamination risks and bringing the water supply in line with food safety standards. The installation of trace-heated, stainless steel pipework ensures long-term reliability, even in external conditions, while the dedicated GRP kiosk provides a secure and controlled environment for water treatment equipment.
