Water Infrastructure Upgrade

Project Overview

We were commissioned to upgrade the water infrastructure at ATL Turbine Services in Dundee, addressing compliance issues and inefficiencies in their existing system. The project involved installing a 3,000L sectional GRP water tank and a Grundfos triple booster pump set to improve water supply reliability and meet Scottish Water byelaws.

Challenges Identified

  • The site had an oversized 24,000L cold water storage tank, originally designed for fire suppression, but was now unnecessary due to the removal of all fire hose reels.
  • The tank’s incorrect piping setup (inlet and outlet on the same side) prevented proper throughflow, leading to stagnation risks.
  • Compliance concerns due to the lack of a suitable AB air gap required by Scottish Water regulations.

Solution Implemented

  • Category 5 GRP Water Tank – Installed to provide the necessary AB air gap, ensuring full compliance with Scottish Water byelaws.
  • Grundfos Triple Booster Pump Set – A new high-output, 3-phase Grundfos system was installed, featuring a standby/backup pump to maintain a continuous water supply in case of pump downtime.
  • Inlet Float Valve – A 2” Keraflo KAX type valve was installed to regulate water flow from the 63mm incoming main.
  • High-Quality Pipework & Insulation – The system was piped in 54mm press-fit copper with foil-faced mineral wool insulation for thermal efficiency and durability.
  • Zero Downtime for the Client – All final connections were completed over the weekend, ensuring no disruption to factory operations.

Outcome

The new system provides a reliable, compliant, and energy-efficient water supply, eliminating previous stagnation issues and improving operational resilience for ATL Turbine Services.
