Faced with the challenge of installing an off-grid water disinfection solution for 25 rural properties, we implemented a proportional chlorine dosing system powered by renewable energy. The goal was to ensure a reliable and efficient water treatment system without access to mains electricity.
Solution Implemented
Chlorine Dosing System – Installed within a dedicated GRP weather-tight enclosure to protect equipment from the elements.
Flow Meter Integration – A 1 ½” pulse output flow meter was placed within an access chamber on the existing 50mm MDPE pipework. This meter sends a signal to the chlorine dosing pump whenever water passes, ensuring precise dosing of hypochlorite as programmed by PHX.
Contact Time & Storage – Chlorinated water is directed into a 5,000L underground potable water tank, allowing sufficient contact time for disinfection before distribution to all properties.
Keraflo K-Type Valve – Installed within the tank to prevent inaccurate dosing, as standard ballcocks can cause minor water flow (“dribble”) that might not be detected by the flow meter.
Renewable Power Supply – Since mains electricity was unavailable, we installed a solar-powered system with battery storage and an inverter to support the 36W dosing pump.
Project Collaboration
- Groundworks – Completed by the client’s groundwork contractor.
- Solar System – Installed by a specialist in renewable energy solutions.
Outcome
The project successfully delivered a fully off-grid, automated water disinfection system, ensuring safe and consistent water quality for all 25 properties. By leveraging solar power, we provided a sustainable and long-term solution without reliance on traditional power sources.
